Gli scisti sono rocce metamorfiche estremamente foliate, a grana medio-fine, derivanti dal metamorfismo regionale di protoliti pelitici (argille). Negli scisti, i singoli minerali sono osservabili a occhio nudo; questa caratteristica permette di distinguerli dalle slate. Esistono numerose variet\u00e0 di scisti, che vengono definite in base al minerale pi\u00f9 abbondante, o a particolari associazioni mineralogiche.
